Okay there is a major concern of lack of sales among Zambian musicians. If one sells 2000 copies of a record then that's an awesome achievement worth boasting about but... what is 2000 copies anyway? are you for real? Oh come on you can do better than that. An amazing argument on this is noted on how many people appear on live shows and concerts. Recently Bflow claimed that he can fill heroes stadium in a single concert. Now the question is, why is it that musicians who claim to have a massive fan base are making less out sells. If a you can manage to pull a crowed of 7000 people in a single concert of K50 entry fee what can stop you from selling fourfold of the sales countrywide. The answer is simple - FREE DOWNLOADS! These have killed the capacity of listeners to buy music whether in stores or online.
Almost all Zambian music websites are free download sites and the industry doesn't seem to have a standard body that monitors piracy in the country neither does anyone seems to care. But the fault sometimes may not be blamed on the fans but the musicians themselves. What they aim for is fame, having their songs reach as many ears as possible. This attitude is not only visible among upcoming musicians but even the established ones. It has become very common for musicians to release singles especially hit singles on the album for free to the general public. How do you expect me to buy your song when i can download or get it for free on some website or from a friend. Some musicians even share their music to friends and fans on social media such as facebook and whatsapp. Their news feeds are filled with free download links to get their songs.
However am impressed with with the recent campaign by some musicians on a NO free download message with emphasis of K3 only per download which is a good move. However measures have to be taken that illegal sharing of these songs is also curbed. The government also has to come in and ban sites (of which the most famous one is ndimba.com) which offers free downloads. In as much there is consent between ndimba.com and the owners of the music, piracy should not be promoted. Musicians should find an alternative to promote their music and not allow all the songs on the album to be downloaded for free.
